"Lucifer the Fallen", 2022 The painting depicts a young, muscular female figure with large blue wings, kneeling on a rock. His/her face shows a mix of emotions, including anger, sorrow, and defiance, reflecting banishment from heaven after rebelling against God. The blue wings, transitioning from bright blue to dark at the tips, symbolize her lost connection with heaven and Lucifer’s fall from grace. Lucifer's nakedness, contrasting with commonly draped angels, suggests his/her banishment and unworthiness of angelic attire. Interpretation and Themes: Bodily Autonomy and Self-Determination: This portrayal of Lucifer, who defied divine authority to assert his/her own will, can be interpreted through a lens of self-determination. Lucifer's act of rebellion, driven by pride and ambition, can be viewed as an extreme assertion of one's own choices and desires, even if those choices led to negative consequences. Pride and Punishment: Lucifer's story is a cautionary tale about the dangers of pride and disobedience. His fall from grace serves as a reminder of the consequences of turning away from a higher authority, in this case, God. Loss and Regret: The sorrowful appearance of Lucifer suggests a sense of regret and pain over his/her banishment, but they are also of wounded pride and resentment, not necessarily repentance. As it were, we may feel "sympathy for the devil". Regarding bodily autonomy: While the term "bodily autonomy" typically refers to an individual's right to make decisions about their own body, free from external influence or coercion, Lucifer's story, though a religious narrative, can be viewed metaphorically in the context of resisting external forces and asserting personal freedom, exemplified in this painting as taking on the female form. This defiance, born from his own will, can be interpreted as a struggle for self-determination against a dominant power. In essence, "Lucifer the Fallen" is a portrayal of a complex figure who defied divine authority and faced the consequences. While the core narrative revolves around pride and punishment, the painting is a testament to the idea of individual will and the assertion of self, however tragic the outcome.
